All prospective first-time home buyers should be aware that they have until 12/01/09 (i.e., 6 months from today) to purchase a home that qualifies for the Fed tax credit, worth 10% of the cost of the home up to $8,000. The tax credit, which is phased out at adjusted gross income levels of $150,000 and up for a married couple, is claimed on IRS Form 5405. The median sales price of an existing home sold in the USA in April 2009 was $170,200. The median sales price of an existing home sold in the USA in April 2004 (i.e., 5 years earlier) was $179,000 (source: National Association of Realtors).
